Statement: Painting Elke Georg-Schumacher
I start covering t he canvas with colours, because empty white areas make me nervous and I am afraid of d es troying them - this factor has to be eliminated.
After that I begin to combine lines and moulds - although I worked at first totally informally, nevertheless I d iscover more and more that I would like to have an "anchor "-.
Wh at now follows, d epends completely on wh at the colours are telling me - whether I further a dd another colour or I r educe somewhat. ¶
In principle I do not know in advance, what I want to paint - thus I do not have concrete co ncept s, but get into what happens. ¶
After longer period of time I now returned to oil painting and work at the time being on the idea: "spaces - cities".

A t the moment I am e xperiment ing once more: develop s mall, square formats, to series (Ac ryl, Gouache) - thereto I have to say tha t I like most experimentations !
Furthermore it is more convenient for my lifestyle at the moment -I am not all the time in Germany. Instead I am living a lot of months in Barcelona, where I don't have an “Atelier” to do large oil paintings.

Elke Georg-Schumacher
Born 26th of January 1942 in Flensburg a town situated in the north of Germany the parents both were singers at the theatre there.
I spent my school time in Aachen, a German city at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium -, at whose city-theatre my parents were engaged at this time.
My way was thus pre-determined - it would lead to the theatre.
I studied opera and concert singing!
1963 First c ommitment in Aachen

¶ 1967 and 1968 participation to the Bayreuth festivals as soloist of
¶ small parts and in the cho rus. ¶

Sometime, then I began to experiment with colours - at the beginning totally self-educated .
Since 1983, after our removal to Wolfsburg, I started to take drawing lessons and to visit painting c ourses (painting with oil colours). ¶
During a stay of three and a half-year in Barcelona I attended l ectures at the University of Barcelona concerning Spanish history and history of art. Furthermore I had the o pportunity, in the studio of the well-known Catalan artist M. A. Raventós to learn s omewhat about her printing techniques and to make some o wn attempts too.
After my return to Germany I enrolled myself in the University for Visual Arts (HBK) in Braunschweig, in order to make m y painting more professional. ¶
I work there with the painter s Nejla Gür and Gerd Brunzema.
